By Priya Priyadarshini DigiGirlz is a program that started in 2001 based off an idea that Carola Dopps presented to the Microsoft Global diversity and Inclusion Team. It is organized as a summer camp with a focus on technology and this program has grown every single year; it has been very successful and has gained a lot of media attention. The DigiGirlz – now in its sixth year – has expanded to four states. Apart from holding camps in Redmond, we also have these camps set up in North Carolina, North Dakota and Texas. This camp was started with the hope that the exposure will encourage and inspire more girls to pursue higher studies and career in technology. As Microsoft diversity consultant Emily McKeon says, “One of the main purposes of the camp is to demystify what a career in technology is all about, so we can attract and recruit girls and women to the field." The idea is to tell girls that technology is not boring and geeky but a ton of fun,Office Professional Plus 2010 Serial, once you learn what can be done with it. This event provides young girls with an opportunity to experience technology first hand. The camp is run by Microsoft employees, with workshops facilitated by employees who have happily volunteered their time to this event. The presentations at this summer camp are given by female executives. Last year I was working for the Global diversity and Inclusion team (who sponsor and organized this event),Office 2010 -Lizenz, we had great key note speakers like Lisa Brummel,Microsoft Office 2010 Activation Key, Debra Chrapaty and Claudette Whiting. Debra Chrapaty,Office 2010 Product Key, who is a Microsoft corporate vice president, shared her inspiring story of how she overcame career obstacles to come so far. Apart from attending the impressive keynote speeches, the girls also get a chance to see product demonstration, learn web page designing, pod casting and other cool stuffs. There’s great diversity among the girls who attend; at the end of the camp they all go home with a new perspective. They leave with something that is life long and very precious: “ a new confidence and passion for technology." As a volunteer last year at the Digigirlz camp, it was very uplifting and invigorating to see so much talent and potential in a room. What was even better was that we as a company were making a long lasting impact on these young girls. The girls were so excited to be on campus, see all the art, and experience the free drinks ... clearly the highlight for many. One girl drank like 5 little cartons of chocolate milk and said “I could work here for free ... just for this." Another smart young lady commented while we were taking the shuttle from the conference center to the MS studio: "This place is huge, it seems like a university ... I would love to go learn technology to be in a cool place like this." Who can apply?

Click here to see the details of where to send your application. Microsoft provides attending the camp free of charge; however, we do not provide expenses related to lodging and travel to the camp. The camp is a 5 day event and occurs during the day from 9 am to 3 pm. I told Mylene, another one of our diversity consultants,Office Pro Plus 2010, about my intentions of a post on the blog about DigiGirlz, and this is what she happily shared. This year, we expanded our camp to a full week. August 14th-18th We have had over 110 volunteers (comprised of Microsoft employees and community partners) help us create and implement a robust 5 day camp for 74 girls from across the country (11 are from out of state). This year’s camp included ice breaker exercises, 4 keynote speakers, 5 different technology tours, 3 demos, 11 hands-on workshops, a panel discussion, job shadow opportunities and a high tech team building event. The camp was featured on the front page of the August 16th edition of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Diversity Careers in Engineering-August/September Issue, and in Bink.nu, the 1-stop source for IT Professionals with the latest Microsoft news, technology, and downloads. Since the end of the camp, we been have receiving daily e-mails from the girls about how much they enjoyed the camp and how they were inspired by what they learned. Priya
