I’m banking on Madonna to make fangs fashionable
Hilary Alexander gives her fashion predictions for the next decade.
BY Hilary Alexander |08 January 2010

Could vampire fangs become the accessory de jour?

I'm glad to see one of my predictions for the next decade is already starting to become reality. On December 30, I jotted down a list of fashion events which could happen in the next 10 years. One was that Russell Brand and Katy Perry would marry, have children and launch a kiddies' range for Marks & Spencer. They've taken the first step; they're engaged.
I wonder how the rest will fare. They were, in order: Victoria Beckham to follow the likes of Stella McCartney and Karl Lagerfeld and design a collection for H&M; little Suri Cruise to make her catwalk debut; Lady Gaga to make the cover of American Vogue; Kate Moss to cut her hair very short; Kate Middleton to choose a mysterious, little-known designer to make her wedding gown; Madonna's daughter Lourdes to become the "face" of Chanel; Madonna herself to start a celebrity craze for vampire "fangs" by wearing a pair custom-designed by Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton and studded with diamonds; Giles Deacon and Gareth Pugh to be offered major jobs at French luxury houses; and Tom Ford to re-enter the women's fashion arena. Some, it has to be said, timberland women -Paris Hilton’, are more likely than others.

The Big Freeze has turned up some fancy footwork, very little of it to do with fashion. The streets were filled with bizarre but necessary sights, such as pin-striped suits worn with Ugg boots (shades of Ronnie Wood, but more tailored) and Glasto-style get-ups such as mini-skirts and wellies.
Many simply recycled that old favourite, the walking boot, with a couple of pairs of socks, although a lady rang Radio 2 to recommend wearing socks over the boots for a better grip.
A colleague here came up with an equally creative solution, unearthing her après-ski boots, which come complete with pop-out crampons, christian louboutin online, perfect for pavements that have turned into skating rinks overnight. Sadly, they were bought in Verbier and aren't available here, despite a frantic trawl of the web.
Snow + Rock, too, has reported a surge in demand for basic Grivel strap-on crampons. Still, for some, vibram fivefingers, style ruled, even in up to a foot of snow. I spotted one fashion victim making her way to Victoria station,- has passed away in Virginia at the age of 81., with precision that would be the envy of Mrs Beckham, in a pair of six-inch Gucci heels and bare legs,CLOSED! I spent Christmas and New Year in New Zealand visiting family, and frequently found myself needing a translator - not because of the accent (I'm a lapsed Kiwi myself) but because of the vocab. The initials "RTDs", for example, hollister outlet, were emblazoned over many shop-fronts in Hamilton and Auckland, and turned out to be short for "ready-to-drinks", as in pre-mixed cocktails or sophisticated alcopops.
"Pre-loved" - which is starting to catch on here - is a more fragrant way of saying "secondhand". But "Dial-A-DIC" had me really stumped. It stands for "driver in charge" or "driver in control", and is a special service which provides a chauffeur home if you're over the limit - possibly from too many RTDs.

Intrigued by all the fuss surrounding the Barnes-born screen idol Robert Pattinson and his vampiric alter ego, Edward Cullen, hermes birkin bags, I used part of the holidays to investigate Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series. I ploughed through book after book, always convinced that on the next page, Bella Swan (played on screen by Pattinson's love interest, Kristen Stewart), would surely turn into a vampire - the "does she or doesn't she" scenario being about the only reason to keep reading. But no. By the time I was halfway through the fourth and final book, with Bella still not having turned into a vampire, birkenstock boots, but about to give birth to a vampire baby, I'd lost the will to live myself.
