Default Beltran Out Again

Moises Alou said he could DH today, if necessary, which is fine and all except for the fact that the Mets play in the National League. That said, I wouldn’t be shocked to see him back in the lineup before Carlos Beltran.
Alou hopes to take early batting practice tomorrow, and the Mets should have a better idea of his status after that. In Beltran’s case, he continues to receive treatment for his strained left abdominal and, well, that’s really about it.
By this time of the season,San Francisco Giants Hats, nobody is completely healthy. Everyone has his aches and pains and, as Willie Randolph often says, it’s a matter of how much discomfort you can take. I wouldn’t go so far as to call him exasperated – confused, perhaps? – about Beltran’s history of injuries. Beltran is, by nature, very cautious when it comes to deciding when he can come back from injuries. Before games, he spends a lot of time making sure his body is ready to go. After games, he’ll routinely spend 30-40 minutes in the weight room for maintenance.
Everybody has a different pain threshold and confidence level about playing hurt. We all know Beltran struggled in 2005, had a spectacular 2006 and is hitting .228 since May 1, the seventh-worst average in the National League. Tell me if I’m wrong Mets fans, but I get the impression that there is a perception that Beltran, as dynamic and talented as he is, is somewhat fragile and, therefore, unlikely to become as much of a favorite here as other players. Is that the case?

Beltran has a little Alou in him.
No doubt about it.
My biggest worry is that they both seem to take a long time to heal. Beltran and Alou.
So does Alou also have a brain injury as well?

Some players have the last laugh.
Heath Bell in San Diego,Baltimore Orioles Hats sale, a former Met.
He was unwanted. But now he has 19 HOLDS as a set up man. Yes,Red Bull Hats Sale, thats twice more than Heilman, who has 8 Holds as a set up man for the Mets.
Twice as many folks.
In fact he is doing so good they dealt Linebrink away. That’s how much they think of Bell. They can trade Linebrink despite the fact they are fighting for first place. Opponents were batting .240 off of Linebrink. ,so maybe Lastings will have the last laugh one day. Maybe as an allstar player for another team, snubbing his nose at the media all the while.
Give the kid a chance.

Ben,
You are dancing around a point that still comes through: Beltran isn’t gritty enough. I get the distinct impression that you believe those are Willie’s sentiments.
Remember when Piazza missed all that time with a torn chest muscle? To me, the question is: could “playing through” an injury make it worse? For example,Detroit Tigers Hats sale, should a player keep going out there after tweaking his hammy? A torn hammy is goodbye season, so to me it makes sense to rest a tweaked hammy.
The same for any other muscle, and the abdomen has some big/important muscles. If Beltran feels a strain, should he ignore that and let it become a tear? I say no.
So, to tackle the issue at face value: does Beltran wimp out over any little thing? Well, I remember when we couldn’t get Jose healthy enough to play for most of a year,Cheap New Era Jordan Hats, and there was some suspicion that he was being too cautious. As I recall, Cameron suggested bringing him to Shea for a couple of days just to remind him that his goal was to get better and start contributing.
Beltran knows this. He isn’t some green kid. He is a finely tuned athlete, capable of remarkable achievements, in his physical prime. It’s a long season. The occasional pulled muscle is just gonna happen.
a) no big deal.
b) take him at his word.
c) Willie – remember that “old school” led to a lot of shortened careers. We know better now.

With Steve Philips gone the Mets should get into the bidding for A-Rod this time around. This way every time Beltran goes into a funk or decides his boo-boo hurts too much,it won’t hurt the Mets as much.Don’t get me wrong,I like Beltran, when he’s on he’s one of the best in the game. It’s just that sometimes he’s a little too sensitive or can’t decide if it’s pain or an injury.Someone like that can’t be your #1 guy.A-rod doesn’t miss games and he doesn’t hide from the press. With him there I think it’ll make Beltran better. Can David Wright play 1st base?

Maybe he’s learning from Coach Ricky “Rest My Hammies” Henderson.

As Peter points out, cheap Baltimore Orioles Hats, there is nothing in Beltran’s history to suggest that he is in any way soft. The better question is whether Beltran’s caution is a reaction to the shabby treatment he received at the hands of Mets fans in 2005. He played through strained quadriceps for much of ‘05 which, unsurprisingly, hampered his performance (though he still had a pretty good season for most players, just not for him). The result? He was booed by Mets fans. Why play through pain if your own fans will boo you as a result?

In 2005, the collective wisdom/criticism (determined a posteriori) about Beltran was that he was being too stubborn by deciding to play through his leg injury–the thought being that he should have gone on the DL for a short period and get better rather than playing with an injury and extending the injury for most of the season. In 2006, I remember that he publicly announced his change in philosophy and took himself out of the lineup when he was injured, which seemed to have worked since he had a much improved year. So I think labeling him as soft or brittle is a bit unfair–for Beltran, it does not make sense (for him and the team) for him to play injured.

It’s past time that ballplayers moderate their weighlifting activities; perhaps they also need to emphasize flexibility training, but in general I think that muscle-building hurts baseball players more than it helps them.
I don’t know how hard Beltran worked to get to where he is, but my impression is that he isn’t simply coasting on his talent. Overall,NBA Hats, I think he’s a really good ballplayer, and I don’t see him as fragile, but it does seem like he’ll take himself out of a current or future game faster than, say, Reyes (or Jeter), and I have no idea whether the reasons are limited to (or even include) factors like his mental makeup, his personality, cheap Los Angeles Dodgers Hats, and the $$$s of his contract.

I think the people in NY are a little to impatient with Beltran. Remember they lost Chavez, Gomez, and Alou, Milledge was injured, and Beltran played every day. There are few other Centerfielders I’d rather have. His injury occured during back-to-back series with the Pirates and Nationals, so the Mets shouldn’t concern themselves with not having Beltran. All year long we have not had Delgado mentally or physically. What happened to his “big” bat,San Diego Padres Hats, that’s what’s ailing the Mets not Carlos Beltran.

PEOPLE…people. Comon! We’re up by four games on the chumps from Atlanta and a 5 games on the Phily Cheese Steaks. Let it go already. Beltran is what he is. EXTREMELY Streaky and barring us pulling out of Iraq as a nation before the playoffs, Beltran will have his chance to be EXTREMELY Streaky in the playoffs.
If we win the Serious this year, Beltrans “softness” will be overshawed by his EXTREME Streakyness in the playoffs.
LETS GO METS.

Minaya increased the team’s risk of having players break down this time of year by having older players on the roster.

Howard,
Beltran is not old. He just turned 30 in April.
