CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Michigan State coach Tom Izzo's decision to reject the Cavaliers' offer to be their coach has started yet another round of speculation regarding LeBron James. What, if anything, does it mean, especially considering James didn't respond to any of Izzo's attempts to contact him?
Izzo was interviewed on "The Dan Patrick Show" on Tuesday morning. The host might have got a tad bit more out of Izzo than the Spartans' coach revealed during his press conference Tuesday night. Included on the show's Web site:
"Izzo admitted it did matter if LeBron was going to be in Cleveland and it does matter who is on the roster. 'Are you crazy? It is about who's there. Better players make you a better coach,Office 2007 Serial,' Izzo said.
"Izzo referred to 'bad timing' and wouldn't answer yes or no if he would have gone if LeBron had committed. He said he did talk to people who are with LeBron every day. Izzo said he heard lots of positive things about Cleveland from LeBron's camp, but he didn't hear a final decision.
"'I think he's going to look at it very honestly,' Izzo said. 'He's probably going to get tugged by the same thing I'm getting tugged by.'
"Dan asked Izzo once and for all,Office Standard, will LeBron stay in Cleveland. 'I think in the end he will, but I do not have any idea,' Izzo said."
Question: When Izzo says, "tugged by the same thing," does he mean James will be "tugged" by loyalty to his area as Izzo was to his in East Lansing?
• Several days ago, various reports referred to a source close to James saying the NBA MVP would endorse Izzo's hiring "100 percent."
Ken Berger, though,Office Pro 2007, writes for CBSSports.com that there may not have been such an "endorsement" and, besides, James has stayed out of touch with the Cavaliers:
"Word is that while he didn't reject the notion of Izzo coaching the Cavs, he didn't entirely endorse it,Microsoft Office Standard 2010, either. In any event,Office Home And Student 2010 Key, LeBron apparently wouldn't even speak with Izzo about his intentions when it comes to his impending free agency. In fact, one person who has been in contact with the Cavs' front office said LeBron has been incommunicado with team officials, as well.
"So once again, the Cavs are held hostage by LeBron. They can't move forward with any serious off-season plans -- franchise-shaping plans -- until they know whether LBJ is staying or going."
Berger also refers to what two NBA team executives told CBSSports.com:
"Those executives also said Grant was performing his due diligence on the trade front, asking several teams about acquiring draft picks. The Cavs have no picks in the 2010 draft, having traded them to Washington (first round) and Phoenix (second round). But even in that pursuit, the executives said Grant's hands are tied because he can't possibly know what kind of trades to make if he doesn't know whether LeBron will be on the team.
"Grant is trying to proceed as though LeBron will stay, but as Izzo's situation proved, that's an exceedingly difficult tightrope to walk."
• One of James' free agent pals is Heat guard Dwyane Wade. Associated Press reports that legislators in Miami are proceeding with a move that would be difficult to duplicate in Cuyahoga County. From AP:
"Dwyane Wade is getting his own county.
"By unanimous vote, Miami-Dade County commissioners declared Tuesday that the area would be known as 'Miami-Wade County' from July 1-7, a week that coincides with the start of NBA totally free agency.
"The resolution was written 'in recognition of all that Dwyane Wade has done for the visibility, stature and national image' of the county.
"Wade will become a no cost agent before July 1, which means he could leave the Miami Heat. Wade has repeatedly said he hopes to stay in Miami, but only if the Heat roster is upgraded.
