While working with Paul McCartney on the two hit singles "The Girl Is Mine" (1982) and "Say Say Say" (1983), the pair became friendly. McCartney told Jackson about the large amount of money he earned from owning music catalogs; he was earning approximately $40 million a year from other people's songs. Jackson subsequently began buying
Ray Bay ########, selling, and distributing publishing rights to music from numerous artists. In 1985, ATV Music, a music publishing company owning thousands of music copyrights, including the Northern Songs catalog that contained the majority of the Lennon-McCartney compositions recorded by the Beatles, was put up for sale. Jackson took an immediate interest in the catalog, but was warned he would face strong competition. Excited, he skipped around saying, "I don't care. I want those songs. Get me those songs Branca [his attorney]". Branca contacted McCartney's attorney, who clarified that his client was not interested in bidding: "It's too pricey". After Jackson had started negotiations, McCartney changed his mind and tried to persuade Yoko Ono to join him in a joint bid, but she declined, so he pulled out. Jackson eventually beat the rest of the competition in negotiations that lasted 10 months, purchasing the catalog for $47.5 million.
Sick of thinking that eating one meal a day will get you slimmer? Yeah, me too. It never works! Your body wants a constant stream of blood sugar to operate ideally. Eat 200-300 calories every few hours, and you will notice a different in energy and how your jeans fit in no time. (Tip: vending machine food does not count!)
Aim for those 8 hours of sleep each night, and you'll start losing weight. Sleep deprivation does two things to keep you plump: first, it releases the stress hormone cortisol which keeps fat firmly in place, and secondly you crave high sugar foods and tend to overeat when you are tired. Sleep deprivation also makes you really, really tired, don't ya know?
Fruits and vegetables rock the food-energy world, so start chowing down. They taste great with some added fat and salt- despite the diet naysayers, you really need to add some fat to vegetables or you aren't getting all the nutrients out of it. Plain broccoli or broccoli sauted in a little butter with some salt and pepper: Which sounds tastier to you? If you already eat and like raw veggies, as I do, then continue to do so. But if "rabbit food" isn't your bag, jazz 'em up!
Get jazzed up about your reinvention by pulling out an old clothing item you no longer can wear, or buy something you want in a smaller size. Put it somewhere visible! This will keep you going by reminding you of your goal every day!
If you find yourself tired after eating an hour or so ago, it means you ate too much processed sugar, and are now "crashing" from the blood sugar spike. Usually you'll eat something else high in sugar to feel good again, and a vicious cycle will occur. Limit the amount you eat, and you'll see energy rise and weight fall.
At the dinner table, practice the tall/thin and short/round game. Pour your drinks in tall, thin glasses, and serve your food on small, round plates. Both of these things have shown to psychologically "trick" our brain into thinking we are getting more.
Feeling sluggish mid-afternoon and you are probably dehydrated. Just a small drop in hydration can make you feel very tired and mentally dull. It also means you'll probably forgo exercise if you are that tired. Our body is 80% water- treat it well and give it what it needs. It will reward you!
Not super hip on water all the time? Change it up with some tea, especially green tea! It tastes great, and boosts your metabolism and energy levels at the same time! Plus, it has a ton of antioxidants. It's like the head honcho of drinks that are good for you, so get some!
On May 14, 1984, he was invited to the White House to receive an award from President Ronald Reagan for his support of charities that helped people overcome alcohol and drug abuse.
