If this Mets team had more of that ‘86 vibe (and not what the vibe became after that), it would do them a world of good.

Materializing like a vision in this dreary clubhouse scene was Darryl Strawberry, who looked resplendent in his Mets uniform. A standout on the Mets teams in the mid-to-late 1980s that won one World Series and never finished worse than second in their division, Strawberry looked fit enough to play Monday against the Atlanta Braves.

“I’m going to give these young kids the same advice I give to my own boys about focus, choices, decisions,” Strawberry, a father of five, said, adding, “What it’s like to excel at a high level and really take care of yourself more than anything. What they have to deal with – the pressures and temptations of life.”

And to read that Darryl is on the upside, well, it brings a real warm feeling. I just wish we could say the same for Doc. Do you know what’s the latest with him?

In the Red Cross ward otherwise known as the Mets clubhouse, infielder Ruben Gotay hobbled in Monday on crutches, with his right ankle heavily bandaged. It was a cloudy day but outfielder Ryan Church walked in wearing

Karen,
I was living in New York in the early ’60s and was a fan when the New York Mets team was called the “New York Mess” and I am still a fan. I have been a Daryl fan from the first day you joined the Mets (even when you went to other teams) and I am still a Daryl fan. Welcome home, and I know you will find exactly what you have been looking for right there with your team as you share your wisdom, experiences, expertise and love for them. Good luck and best wushes to you,

Can we get a picture of Darryl into the paper, do you think? That would bring cheer, to see him in a Mets uni and feeling good.

Seems like a pretty appropriate birthday gift – Happy Birthday (3/12) Darryl! Don’t let the naysayer’s even walk in your line of sight. You’ve been there. Done that. Share what you’ve learned and be happy! Cheers! C

Strawberry, a Los Angeles native,
St Louis Cardinals Hats, was the No. 1 overall pick of the Mets in 1980. An eight-time All-Star,
Montreal Expos Hats, he helped the Mets to the 1986 World Series championship and, later in his 17-year career, was with the Yankees’ from 1995 to 1999, playing a part in the 1996 and 1999 World Series championships.
It wouldn’t be the worst thing for those guys to get together with these guys and remind them to be nasty and ruthless out there.
All the best to Dar-ryl.
Daryl,

Keith is already a member of the fraternity, Ronnie and HoJo too; where’s Gary these days?
At 46, Strawberry knows better than to take his good health for granted, having battled colon cancer and drug addiction. He said “life is good” and on this day it was easy to believe him. The Mets announced they have hired Strawberry to serve the club in various capacities, among them a special instructor in spring training.

His long battle with drugs played out in public, giving Strawberry empathy for the players implicated in baseball’s steroids era who are now squirming in the spotlight. Asked what advice he might have for them based on his experience,

I concur. Would love a picture of Daryl in his Mets uniform today. One of his sons, DJ, plays in the NBA for the Phoenix Suns and is a great defender/high energy guy! :)
