WESTERN REGION – Obaid Khalfan Al Mazrouei, Member of the Higher Organizing Committee and Director of Liwa Date Festival 2011, which is being organized under the generous patronage of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, and organized by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), revealed a high average sale from ripe date and handmade products in the festival, with daily average sale reaching Dh250.000, a figure that reflected the keen interest shown by tourists and visitors to buy Liwa and the UAE ripe dates and the handmade products.

power cording to Al Mazrouei, was the growing interest shown by visitors to get the information about the products showcased in the traditional market such as usage and benefits. He added that the festival’s visitors admired the multi-use of the palm tree and its parts and fruits, which are used as food, drink and tools for daily use among other uses. He added that entries for Al Farth category will be submitted today and entries will be evaluated in Best Heritage Show competition before the final results will be announced in the next day.
Entries in Best Heritage Show this year feature a unique diversity, showcasing the most prominent features of the traditional residence for Abu Dhabi and Al Ain people and the traditional residence of Liwa people, in addition to fishing tools and heritage tools for the daily use that were showcased through a unique museum designed by Ahmed Hamad Al Mazrouei in the form of an old residence. The competition aimed at reflecting the UAE traditions and customs and showcasing highlights of the old local environment with 16 participants in the competition this year.
The museum exhibited a number of ancient items, the oldest of which is more than 100 year old, including samples of clothing and women jewelry, heritage weapons as well as
keys and locks and the daily use tools such as pots, jugs, bottles, jars and spoons. The museum, also, displayed farming tools such as plow. It displays also old doors and jars.
Ghabesha Saeed is participating in an entry called 'Heritage Tent' that reflects the traditional residence of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain people. This tent showcases the tools which were used for daily life, such as the cooking pots, ripe date trays, pans for preservation of fish. It showcases also a bread oven, water jars and tools made from palms.
Salma Hamad Al Mazrouei participates with “The First Residence”, in which she displays the traditional residence of Liwa which is called “Al Arish”. It contains a number of special boxes that keep tools, clothes, fruits with a group of hunting tools and handmade products made from palm in addition to pitchers and heritage clothes for men and women.
Folklore bands shows are still underway as well as various musical performances presented by musical band of the General Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police.
ADACH promotes the culture of palm, ripe date and innovating practical products inspired by heritage
The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, organizer of Liwa Date Festival, aims to promote the culture of palm and ripe date among generations through this festival which stimulates palm farming in environment friendly way with the ultimate aim of improving the quality of production and preserving the palm tree.

Safia Al Qubaisi, the Handicraft Development Officer at the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, said the festival is part of the authority’s strategy of preserving and further developing the physical and moral heritage of the emirate of Abu Dhabi, with a particular focus on the palm tree which occupies a prominent position in the human memory of the UAE community.
She added that the authority’s pavilion is keen to highlight the creative production of the heritage crafts by displaying a lot of handmade products and the daily use tools and encouraging the survival of these professions.
Mathew Crossman, a tourist from Australia said that these products reflect the lifestyle of the UAE people and clarify how they managed to invent their tools and overcome the difficult life conditions. He was interested to know more about the UAE heritage, lifestyle and the handmade products which depend mainly on palm in home, food and drink among others.

Russia’s Muradov invents delicious dishes from Al Khallas date, lamb and camel milk
The festival witnessed new innovative culinary arts that combined the European and the UAE cuisines by the Russian Chef Lev Muradov, from Grand Millennium Al Wahda, Abu Dhabi, who used local ingredients blending lamb with Al Khallas date and camel milk.
The chef made an appetizing starter of lobster with watercress and date pickles prepared in the gaspatcho way, (using the ingredients without stewing), in addition to stuffed scallops with cheese,

The main dish was a blend between lamb and five types of peppers, couscous, eggplant, pomegranate jelly and fresh apple. Muradov was, also, behind the creation of a new dessert dish themed “The Tree of Life and the Magic Lamp of Aladdin”, made mainly from date and the Italian Mascarpone cheese. The dish that was received by a great deal of admiration by gourmets from a number of renowned international hotels contains ice cream from camel milk, date paste, pistachios, saffron, Arabic coffee foam and grated lemon peel.
