Dressing Your Age
One of the biggest mistakes a man can make in attempt to be fashionable and cool is dressing younger than they are. Nothing is more obvious or embarrassing than a man in his 40's or 50's who dresses like he is 20. It may be true that the clothes are indeed cool and extremely stylish, however if they are not age appropriate you will just end up looking like a big cheese ball.The Solution:
While shopping in a particular store or shop, look around. Are the other patrons dramatically younger than you? Are the associates still in high school?
Start in the back if you are not experienced at running in a race. This way, the more experienced runners would not have to route around you. You will want the chance to take the race at your own pace. It is also a good idea to stop and use the water stations. Drinking sport drinks can keep your energy up as well.
If you do get hungry after 6 PM at night, it is okay to eat a light snack; preferably one that you have tested out beforehand. Having a lot of food in your system that your body is still trying to digest while you are racing will make you feel slower. It is also a good idea to have eight ounces of a good electrolyte drink about two hours before you head to bed to give your body the extra vitamins and minerals it may need. After you wake up, drink four to six ounces of water every hour to keep your body properly hydrated.
Some people can have an alcoholic beverage and be okay before a race, but if you have not tested it out before, you should wait until the next race to have a cold one beforehand. Keep in mind that alcohol will also dehydrate your body

It is important to find the appropriate shoes that you will use for the race, and try them out a few times, to get them worn in. That way, you will be able to see if they will wear well or if you will have problems with them. The shoes should be very flexible, so the foot can roll from toe to heel easily while you run.
It helps to not go to bed hungry, but to not completely fill yourself up the night before the race. Some runners assume it is okay to eat a large dinner the night before the race. This can often be counterproductive. Food takes about 36 hours to digest enough so you can use the energy during your race.

This will give you a good idea of how going across the finish line will feel. Walking around the track will help you warm up and also get a feel of where you want to start out and also where the water stations are going to be.
It is not a good idea, however, to have alcoholic drinks the night before you are preparing to race. The depressant effect can catch up with you the next morning right before the race. If you are planning on having an alcoholic drink, you should just stick to one portion.
Start out slowly in the beginning of the race. Most people make the mistake of starting out too fast, thus burning all their energy at the beginning. Visualizing the lineup also helps when starting and prepping for a race.
This would also be the perfect opportunity to test out your racing shoes. Racing shoes should be light in weight, and the soles should be hard but flexible. It is also important for your shoes to be bendable and breathable from the top of the shoe to support proper running technique. Most importantly, your racing shoes should be comfortable and able to get you through the race without any pain or clenching. They should be neither too loose, nor too tight, as either one of these can lead to blisters and other unpleasant problems.
An important factor of running and completing your first race is to get in plenty of practice. If possible, you should try running a long practice training run on the race course itself. This will help you familiarize yourself with the course, and the way that the track is set up. You will be able to see which areas you can advance in, and areas that you would need to work on maintaining speed.
Another important factor is to line up with someone of the same ability. You do not want to be swept into a pace that is too fast. Don't get discouraged if there are people passing you. There is always going to be someone in front of you
