When I am out recruiting at a college, I like it when the students/candidates/naysayers ask me provoking and controversial questions about Microsoft. I don’t come to campus armed with PowerPoint presentations of the company history,
Microsoft Office Pro 2007, how well our products are doing vs. the competitors, or a showing of the latest and greatest products that MS has to offer. I show up to all of my schools without notes, without a presentation, and without an agenda. I spend the first 10 minutes talking about who I am, how I got into my job, and describe some of the positions that I am recruiting for. Then, I open it up for questions from the students. I tell them to ask the toughest questions that they can think of, and say that I will give prizes for the most controversial. If the crowd is quiet, I start it off myself. I ask the students to tell me what they think of Microsoft. If I still don’t get a response, I pass pieces of paper around so students can ask their questions without having to be in the spotlight. For example, I just got back from Boston, MA, where I visited one of my most favorite schools,
Office 2010 Sale, Northeastern University. I hire mostly IT interns and some FT developers from Northeastern. I think it is truly one of the best schools in the country. The day before I held interviews there, I asked the same old questions, was asked the same old questions and finally opened it up to controversy. I asked a room full of students “When you think of Microsoft’s main location, Redmond/Seattle, what is the FIRST thing that comes to mind?” The students that had been quiet and controversy-free for over 30 minutes unanimously cheered “RAIN!” Damn that rain. Everywhere I go I hear people talk about the rain in Seattle. All students think of Seattle/Redmond and they think RAIN!!! Why is this??? I am a Washington State native and have never experienced such terrible weather as I have when I am traveling the country. Yet, everywhere I go, people ask about the rain in Seattle. They say “I hear it rains all year round”; “I hear it rains for 11 months straight,
Microsoft Office Pro Plus, and when it’s not raining, its grey”; and “The sun never shines in Seattle”. Well, I want to set the record straight once and for all. This blog is going to give you the facts about the weather in Seattle. Below, I have quoted some facts from various sources regarding our weather in Seattle. It may not change the country’s perspective, but it may change the minds of a few people out there reading this, and that’s good enough for me. FACT 1: Seattle averages only 34.3 inches of rain per year. Shocking, I know! This is in fact less rain than New York City, Atlanta, Houston, Chicago, Miami and the majority of the East Coast. Seattle has a lot of cloudy days, but very few actual rainy days that make an impact. Truth is, if and when it does rain, it’s a slow drizzle, which is well worth it when we have the most beautiful spring and summer anywhere in the USA. FACT 2: Seattle’s average summer temperature is between 75 – 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Most people don’t believe it,
Microsoft Office Pro Plus 2007, but it gets pretty warm in Seattle. Plus, the great thing about our summer is that there is no humidity. Yes, that’s right - when it’s hot, it’s a dry heat. You might not even see rain for weeks during the summer. In addition, you are living within a few miles of several lakes, rivers and a stone’s throw from the Pacific Ocean. The majority of Microsofties have boats, jet-skis, or friends who have these. Fact 3: I do not own an umbrella. Yes, you can ask my teammates and they might say I have frizzy hair, but I do not carry an umbrella, on my person or in my car. A few weeks ago, it was down-pouring unusually hard for Seattle and I was in another building for a meeting. I waited around at the end of the meeting and asked a few people, “Does anyone have an extra umbrella that I can jump under?” The funny thing was that NO ONE HAD AN UMBRELLA, PERIOD. We all waited for a MS shuttle to pick us up. That’s right- a bunch of Seattlites and not one umbrella. It really differs from what you see on TV shows about Seattle, where everyone is running around in rain slickers, boots and with huge golf umbrellas. That is not the case. So, I hope I cleared up a few things and dispelled some rumors. This week, we've had days where it's 63 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. I am getting ready to bring my air conditioner out…well, maybe not quite, yet.
