The U.S. ambassador to Ankara Francis Ricciardone called on Turkey and Israel to keep diplomatic channels open, Turkish Hurriyet Daily News reported Thursday.
The United States hopes that Turkey and Israel would normalize their relations as soon as possible, Francis Ricciardone was quoted as saying.
The U.S. envoy expressed sorrow for the recent developments of Turkish-Israeli relations, adding that Turkish-Israeli relations are of crucial importance for the regional stability.
On May 31, 2010, Israeli commandos raided Mavi Marmara, a humanitarian aid flotilla heading for Gaza, killing eight Turkish nationals.
Turkey demanded Israel to make a formal apology, offer compensation to the families of the victims and end its blockade on Gaza following the event.
Israeli officials stressed that Israel would not apologize for its soldiers' acts of self-defense while "regrets the loss of life. "
The United Nations set up a panel to examine the incident. The panel's long-awaited "Palmer Report" was handed over to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sept. 2.
The report said Israel's interception of the vessels was " excessive and unreasonable," while the flotilla acted "recklessly" in attempting to breach the naval blockade. It also said the Israeli naval blockade on Gaza was imposed as a "legitimate security measure" to prevent weapons from entering Gaza by sea.
Ankara announced last week the downgrading of diplomatic relations to the level of second-secretary and the suspension of military cooperation with the Jewish state. On Tuesday, Ankara went a step further, announcing the suspension of trade with Israel's defense industries and promising to follow up with additional sanctions.
Further, Turkey also launched measures pertaining to freedom of navigation in the Eastern Mediterranean and prepared to demand a review of the Israeli blockade over Gaza by the International Court of Justice.
