Default The Torre and Zimmer Chronicles

It does not matter the dodgers are going to make the playoffs, and the yankees not. Joe Torre is the most intelligent manager in baseball, he is going to take the dodgers all the way to the world series and beat the red sox. Youll see

OK. With his ace down or not playing well and his closer out for two months, Torre gets credit for a team that is still one game worse than the Yankees while playing in the easiest division in baseball.

When I asked Don Zimmer when was the last time he had spoken to Joe Torre, his old buddy with the Yankees, Zimmer paused, looked at his watch and waited a few more seconds. Eventually, Zimmer smiled and said, “About 10:30 this morning.”
And that’s a damn shame. Torre should have been there for the last season at Yankee Stadium and at least the first season of the new one. If Torre were around, I’m sure they’d be fighting for the wild card right now instead of looking at elimination in the next two or three days.
“What would that be for Joe?,” Zimmer asked. “Thirteen years in a row? That’s a pretty good roll. I think he’s going to do it.”

His ace(Brad Penny) has been either injured or ineffective all season and his closer(Takashi Saito) has’nt pitched in two months. I doubt anyone would have picked the Dodgers to win the division with Penny pitching to a 6.15 ERA. Give credit where credit is due JEP.
Last night’s final game at the real Yankee Stadium had many moving tributes to past players and moments of greatness. But as the Yank’s staved off elimination by a thread with a win over the Orioles, I couldn’t help but think all night, where was Joe? He should have been there. Living in Brooklyn which had its’ heart stolen when the Dodgers were moved to L.A., it was hard to reconcile that this great manager, who lead the Yanks to so many peaks in recent years, had landed out there too!And now sitting on the brink of a legue title. What was Steinbrenner thinking? Joe should have been there! In uniform leading his team.
Girardi has some experience to gain but could yet be a great manager if he mellows out and learns to take the highs with the lows.

Success in a relative term. Torre doesn’t have a batch of bloated superstars to work with (Manny aside). So given what he has to work with he’s doing a lot better than Girardi.
“Torre’s success”? His team is two games WORSE than the Yankees.
I was one of the people who thought the Yankees needed a fresh start with a new manager.

Zimmer called Torre on Wednesday to discuss horses, not baseball. He said one of Torre’s horses recently won a race so Zimmer teased Torre about not giving him an advance tip. Torre was the manager and Zimmer was the bench coach as the Yankees won four World Series titles.

I miss Torre’s zen postgame interviews when he’d sit there, sipping green tea. It was like all was right with the world.

I said it then and I say it now, the stupidest move the Yankees ever made was getting rid of Torre and not Cashman. Torre made the playoffs with 12 straight teams of Yankees, what has Girardi done but take the same players and finish near the bottom of their Division. Money well spent Mr. Steinbrenner. Joe can send you a card from the Series.

Joe should give some credit to the Gods of Baseball. They will do anything to show up the Yankees. They had some impact on Joe’s success. It will take the brothers Steinbrenner about ten years to get a division win. It took that long after George bad mouthed his World Series team in 1981.

Joe Girardi is a delusional clown, who can’t see the ship sinking beneath him….
Experience, composure, leadership, results; if I owned a major league baseball team in need of a manager, I’d hire Torre in a heartbeat and pay him whatever the hell he wanted.

If Torre makes the playoffs, it would be the 13th straight season that he has taken a team to the postseason. Of course, Torre’s first 12 were with the Yankees. The Yankees would need a miracle to make the playoffs this season.

Yeah, right, all that was missing from the Yankees this year was the calm, steady leadership of Joe Torre. This is an old, mediocre team and with a combo of Miller Huggins,Cartier Sunglasses, Casey Stengel and Joe Torre managing them this would still be, at best, a third place team.
Oh, and by the way, what Torre “has to work with” is a pitching staff with the NL’s best ERA. Even with their lineup, if the Yankees were tops in AL pitching, they’d probably be in first place.
While Zimmer, who is a senior baseball adviser for the Tampa Bay Rays, is focused on what the Rays are doing, he has also followed Torre’s success in his first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers have a two and a half game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League West.

Joe Girardi is getting a pass this year because the Steinbrenners don’t want to look like the damned fools that they are for letting go of Torre. So, after 12 straight years of post-season play at Yankee Stadium, including four World Series wins, the Yankees are going to end the regular season in fourth place. And they’ll probably do it by losing to the Orioles in the very last game played at Yankee Stadium and getting swept at Fenway the following weekend.
I agree with Zimmer; I think he’s going to make 13 in a row too. Too bad the younger Steinbrenners were so short-sighted!
I still think it may have been necessary in the long run, in terms of rebuilding this team for the next decade, but that aside I’m delighted that Torre’s new team is in 1st place.
