Sarkozy may have more luck with his “moral” financial transactions tax, though big questions remain:

It is sometimes difficult for the British and for the rest of the world to understand the European mentality. That is to say the mentality of some of Europe’s leaders. Hence President Sarkozy’s extra-loud declaration of commitment to the euro, just in case we didn’t believe it the first time. At the World Economic Forum in Davos the president implicitly knocked down George Soros and other speculator-critics betting against the euro. “Chancellor Merkel and myself will never – do you hear me, never – let the euro fall “The euro is Europe. And Europe spells 60 years of peace. Therefore we will never let the euro go or be destroyed. Euro-fanatic words that could easily have come from the lips of Francois Mitterrand. But I would just wonder quite how committed to the euro project Mrs Merkel really is. Actually quite a few of these issues have been explored by the IMF, which seems to be vaguely in favour of the idea. As President Sarkozy takes over the G20 this may be one idea he will be able get the world to agree; saving the euro will be much harder work. As a footnote, please note that both George Soros and Nicolas Sarkozy have Hungarian roots. Make of that what you will.
