Default The Summer of Arcade Returns for Xbox Live

Baby, It's Hot Outside, So Stay Inside and Play Games

"Toy Soldiers: Cold War" (Aug. 17; $15; rated Teen) Heck yes! The original "Toy Soldiers" was a clever and refreshing tower defense game in which World War I-styled toy grunts and vehicles fought it out on miniature battlefields. As the sequel title implies, "Cold War" takes places in the 1980s and features weaponry from that era. This is probably the only acceptable way to relive your "G.I. Joe" days without embarrassing yourself (too much).

Behold, a summer feast of cheap downloadable games:
"Bastion" (out now; $15; rated Everyone) -- A mesmerizing action role-playing game set in a unique fantasy world of lush colors. "Bastion" kicked off the Summer of Arcade this week and has been raking in praise and high scores from critics. The game features some alluring world design and a "mysterious narrator" that chronicles every step of your journey.
If you follow my summer safety tips, you'll be well on your way to having the kind of ghostly white complexion found only on submariners and British tourists. But more importantly, xbox points, all of that time indoors will allow you to experience the majesty of (cue trumpets and reverb) The Summer of Arcade!
Heat stroke. Heat exhaustion. Heat. Sunburns. Suntans. Melanoma the size of Oklahoma. It's bad stuff.
Time for a public service announcement on summer safety.

"From Dust" (July 27; $15; rated Everyone) -- This "god game" puts you in control of the fate of a primitive tribe, requiring you to control the elements and reshape the land to assist in their survival. I'm mainly interested in "From Dust" because of its creator, Eric Chahi, who made the memorable and surreal "Out of This World" in the early 1990s.
In the interest of safety I advise you to spend the next few months indoors within the blast radius of a heavy duty air conditioner. A personal tip: Don't run an industrial-sized gaming PC and a Xbox 360/PS3 simultaneously in the same small room, unless you want your head to liquefy like that guy in "Raiders of the Lost Ark."
The Summer of Arcade has become an awesome tradition on Xbox Live, as it usually highlights some of the best new downloadable games of the year within a brief, action-packed release schedule. This summer, we're getting one (potentially) fantastic game per week through Aug. 17, with each priced at $15 or less.
Folks, it's hellaciously hot out there and that entails all sorts of risks.
"Fruit Ninja Kinect" (Aug. 10; $10; rated Everyone) -- The popular iPhone/iPad app about, uh, slicing fruit, xbox live codes, comes to the Xbox with support for the Kinect motion-sensing device.
"Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet" (Aug. 3; $15; rated Everyone) -- How can you not like that title? "ITSP" is described as a "side-scrolling adventure that is a fusion of art, classical animation, xbox 360 codes, and captivating gameplay," which appears to be full of fun puzzles and exploration in an exotic alien realm.
