Students go without shoes
Over 300 students and faculty participated in an event where students paid one dollar to walk around the school the entire day without their shoes on. Why?
For a cause.
One Day Without Shoes is a nationwide awareness day about the growing dangers of people who do not have shoes. This event was first created by TOMS Shoes.
Many Americans can say that they have shoes, and more often than not, multiple pairs of shoes. That said, many would not know the experience of being without such a seemingly easy-to-come-by luxury. Around the world, and even in America, millions are forced to walk without shoes.
That is why MHS sponsored One Day Without Shoes in early April. During homeroom on April 5,
osiris shoes, teachers showed students a two-minute video to raise awareness and encourage participation in the event. Students could then donate $1 and walk around the school with just their socks.
Math teacher Dan Sheppard said that morning, “It’s been alright so far, my feet are a little cold.”
Some students, like senior Nikki Snider, were not willing to give up her shoes. She said, “I wanted to keep my shoes on, but I wanted to help the cause, so I donated any change in my pocket.”
Freshman Kayleigh Pietrantone was the organizer of the day. She picked up the idea from her friend who attends West Geauga High School. She then went to Mr. Loewer, pitched the idea, and then spread the word through word-of-mouth, text messages, and Facebook.
At the end of the event on April 5, the school raised nearly $450. The earnings from the fundraiser went to Providence House located in Cleveland. They will buy shoes for children who are without any.
“I’m really excited how this turned out, and how many people participated, and how much we could help Providence,” Pietrantone said.
So when there is a cause to help the less fortunate, Mayfield students will step to the plate to help.
