When a straight guy takes a look at the other side, he produces an eye-opening film about the lives and experiences of Drag Queens, both onstage and off. A documentary film about the lives of several different and unique Drag Queens living, working and performing on stage and off in the little island paradise of Key West.
Key West is a small city in the great state of Florida, and is located at the southernmost point of the Florida Keys island chain. It is actually closer to Cuba than it is to Miami. Key West is a jewel of a city with rich history, very diverse people of different cultures and traditions. Key West has beautiful scenery, and has one of the largest historic districts in the country. Key West promotes a "come as you are" attitude that makes it a place that people from all over the world want to come and spend some time to relax and enjoy. The "Keys", as the chain of islands are nicknamed, are home to the only living coral reef in North America. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. It has world class fishing, sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, power boating and beautiful weather on a year round basis.
But let us get to the heart of the subject matter. The characters in this film are all very real, talented, and quite unique and different in both lifestyle and personality. Drag Queens make up a small sub-cultured genre of Key West society. So just what is a Drag Queen anyway? Drag Queens are men who dress in women's clothing and wear lots of make up, 6 inch spiked high heels, and have outlandish hairdos that include some amazing wigs. Some wear tight fitting corsets to mold their shapes to appear more like a women, others wear fitted bras with molded breasts in them. Drag Queens wear tight fitting dresses, and accessorize with gaudy and outrageous jewelry. A few of them have had breast implants and others have undergone partial or even complete ###### change operations.
Some are extremely beautiful and look enough like a women that you really cannot tell the difference. Others are not so beautiful!! Most refer to themselves as a "she", but there are a few that refer to themselves as "he". I have found that they are all "gay", and most have had problems within their families and society as the discovery of being gay unfolded at some point in their lives. Many of them have been treated badly at different points in their lives and still carry these scars with them. Key West is a very open-minded community with a large gay population. The drag queens are free to maintain their lifestyle in this all welcoming community. There is still discrimination and some gay bashing that goes on, but on a much smaller scale than the rest of society in general.
The Drag Queens in this film are a talented group with a strong desire to perform onstage. Many of them have come from different theatrical backgrounds, either growing up performing in school or with various theatre groups or different types of performing troupes. One thing I have discovered is that you have to be talented to be chosen as a Drag Queen performer in Key West. They do not just allow any Drag Queen to be on stage; you have to prove that you are good enough before you are allowed to perform. You must audition and be approved by the stage director and "drag mother", who is named Sushi, to perform on stage in front of a live audience.
So how in the world did I get involved with a group of drag queens? I have watched the Drag Queens perform a couple of times and have seen them in full "drag" outfits on Duval Street in Key West for many years. I was filming the New Years Eve celebration a couple of years ago. It is a very well known New Years Eve celebration that is attended by several thousand people and is broadcast on CNN all around the world. The highlight of New Years Eve is the drag queen Sushi who is a gorgeous drag queen and she is lowered from the top of a building on Duval Street in a giant red high heeled shoe at the stroke of midnight. But before filming the event that evening, I thought to myself, I have never had a conversation with a drag queen and was curious and wondered what they are like. I wanted to meet the drag queen who was going to be sitting in the giant red shoe.

She remembered and I told her I had this idea for a project I wanted to discuss with her and she agreed to get together for a meeting. We agreed on the way it would be produced, and what each of our responsibilities would be and and we began the film shoot.
His, or I should say her, name is Sushi, and she is by far the most famous drag queen in Key West, and also parts well beyond. She is also the most attractive and talented drag queen in town and a caring person that takes care of her Momma who now lives with Sushi and a house full of Drag Queens. Thus began the documentary "Audience with the Queens", that is now more than a year into filming and has completed the first segment of what hopes to become a series.. It is a fascinating film that will both entertain you and make you want to know more about these talented, complex and caring individuals.
