Many salespersons fail to emotionalize the sales process within their sales approach as they look to qualify or even fact find. These educated professionals forget that potential customers (a.k.a. prospects) are living breathing human beings who buy to meet their known and unknown needs based upon emotions. This is why those initial few second when you meet someone for the first time are so necessary to sales success even if the meeting is over the telephone.
Emotionalizing the desire is fairly simple when directly connecting the feelings to a future goal or objective. This then makes the question as easy as:
Why is achieving this goal, objective or desire important to you?
This qualifying question delivers several other results to further differentiate you from all those other gray suits in that very crowded marketplace.
First, you are now building pain. This is being done subconsciously as well as consciously when you ask what happens if the goal is not achieved? Many sales persons are just focused on selling their products or services and fail to demonstrate authentic concern.
Another benefit of this question is that you may learn what this person values. What people values is usually what motivates them to go to that next step within the sales process.
Additionally, you may learn of any other participants within the decision making process. For example, you are speaking with the sales manager and he shares part of his gain is recognition by his boss. Then you can ask a follow-up question such as: How will your boss be involved in this potential solution?
To be different, to be what I call the Red Jacket, continues from your initial meeting and may even begin during the qualification stage of your sales process.
