The return of Samus Aran, Nintendo’s iconic bounty hunter, is usually a reason to rejoice and Metroid: Other M is no different. Developers, Team Ninja, usher in a return to the series’ routes, albeit with a twist: Samus able to move and shoot in three dimensions. Other M’s story, an investigation of a distress signal on a research facility, is but a platform to reintroduce old foes and Metroid’s classic gameplay, while a new dodging technique – required learning to survive the title’s latter stages – enlivens proceedings. Further innovation would have been welcome but this is still a compulsive, imaginative adventure. *****

Stranded outside of Las Vegas, in dire need of anti-zombie drug ‘Zombrex’ to treat his infected daughter and without transportation, new Dead Rising protagonist Chuck Greene is having a bad day. Controlling And Yet It Moves’ protagonist is but a simple matter of left, right and jump, its genius is revealed in the movement of the hero’s fragmented environments. A tilting of the Wiimote twists his entire world, making sheer walls into gentle slopes and far-off platforms suddenly a short leap away. Intelligent, physics-based puzzles and low-key pacing create a distinctive, mesmerising experience that does credit to both its developer, Broken Rules, and Nintendo’s WiiWare online gaming service. ****
