Second XINGYUN Awards to Focus on SF On July 8, 2011 the World Chinese Science Fiction Association revised the charter of its second XINGYUN Awards by eliminating fantasy categories. The resulting awards for world Chinese science fiction cover ten categories: best novel, novella, short story, and mobile phone story, bose headphones and best book, magazine, dramatic presentation, author, editor, and promoter. Nominations for the Second XINGYUN Awards will be extended through August 15, and the voting period will be compressed from two months to one. The awards ceremony will be held in Chengdu on November 12, 2011. 2010 Galaxy Awards The winners of the 2010 Galaxy awards were announced in the July edition of Science Fiction World: Special Galaxy Prize: Three Body III: Dead End by Liu Cixin Best Story: "In Life, Seldom Meeting" by He Xi Outstanding Stories: "Keeping Watch for a Century" by Wang Jinkang "Street of a Hundred Ghosts" by Xia Jia Readers' Choice: "Calculating the ########s" by Chi Hui "Memories of Two Lives" by Fifty String "Roses of Old" by Chang Jia "Caged Crow" by Ya Xiaonuan "Star of Eternal Night" by Ye Xingxi Most Popular Foreign Author: George R. We extend our apologies to all prospective entrants." No explanation has been offered to date. Run by Yeh Lee-hwa and the Center for SF Studies at Taiwan's National Chiao Tung University, the Ni Kuang Awards have been given ten times since their founding in 2001. Final Nominations for Sky Awards Special Contribution Prize The Second Sky Awards, annual awards for Chinese science fiction and fantasy voted on by fans, has announced nominations in the Special Contribution category: Dong Renwei (founder and chair of the World Chinese Science Fiction Association), science and SF media company Guokr.com, SF author Liu Cixin, the book Tales of Tarsylia, SF fan Xiao Ji, and e-zine New Realms of SF & Fantasy. Voting is now open for this category. Three Body X Published Three Body X, a novel-length piece of fan fiction, was published by Science Fiction World in June. The author, Bao Shu, currently resides in Europe and is a devoted reader of Liu Cixin's work. He is rumored to have offered to give half of his manuscript fee to the original author, who declined. SMD on Trends in SF Publishing On July 12, Southern Metropolis Daily published a lengthy article entitled "After Three Body – Leverage and Force in the SF Publishing Boom" that discussed the social influences of Chinese science fiction and its future directions in the wake of the hot-selling conclusion to the Three Body series. Using interviews with dr dre headphones authors, editors, and fans including series author Liu Cixin, Albert Tam, Bao Shu, Hao Jingfang, Yang Yuejiang, Storyman, and San Feng, the clear, even-handed article examined the SF environment in the "post-Three Body era," concluding that the genre is on the rise in China but requires a range of different types of authors to flourish. SF Sweeps into Hong Kong Hong Kong-based academic Leung Man Tao devoted five consecutive episodes of his TV program "Eight Minutes of Reading," to Liu Cixin's Three Body series. The program, which airs on Phoenix TV, gets right to the heart of books during its eight-minute episodes, and as one of Phoenix TV's core cultural commentators, Leung casts a wide net to select books across a variety of categories, from literature, history, science, and religion, to finance, business, and biography. The Hong Kong book fair, which opened on July 20, invited Liu Cixin and former Science Fiction World head A Lai to speak at the event. Ji Shisan Organizes SF Publishing Team in Chengdu Ji Shisan, well-known in science fiction circles through his Science Squirrels Society, selected Chengdu as the base for a new science fiction publishing team. Ji is now devoting the majority of his attention to Guokr Interactive Technology Media Company, for which he is CEO, with the aim of developing a science media outlet. In March, the Chengdu arm of Guokr Reading was launched. It now has three members and focuses primarily on science fiction publishing. World Chinese Science Fiction Association and Chongqing Publishing House Sign Long-Term Agreement beats by dre studio to Promote Youth SF The first volume of the Red Erosion trilogy, by young writer Mo Xiong, is scheduled to be published in July with the help of the WCSFA. The publisher has high hopes for the trilogy, which it calls a fusion of science fiction and mass-market fiction. New Magazine from Nanpai Sanshu to Serialize Qian Lifang's Fate Nanpai Sanshu, the author of the popular grave-robbing series Grave Robbing Notebook, is about to launch the new fantasy-focused magazine Great Reads in August. The magazine will reportedly serialize Fate, the new novel by historical SF author Qian Lifang. Qian's first novel, Will of Heaven, sold a record 150,000 copies in the edition published by Science Fiction World, but it appears that Qian has changed publishers for her second novel. China Film Group to Create a Phantom Knight The China Film Group recently began shooting the new science fiction movie Phantom Knight, which will tell of how the Phantom Knight battles a robot army controlled by Commander K. The film is intended to create a Chinese-style superhero. In addition to importing science fiction movies from overseas for more than a decade, the China Film Group has also invested in domestic fare like CJ-7 and Future X-Cops, taking advantage of its superior distribution capacity to counter the poor word-of-mouth these films have received. The Group remains a major force behind the future development of domestic science fiction cinema. Ed. Ling Zhou& Dongmei Ren, Trans.
