It's a grad girl's biggest fear. But Heather Holland will walk fearlessly into her graduation dance knowing there won't be another girl in the room wearing the exact same dress.
The 17-year-old J. Percy Page high school student made sure of that by having Edmonton designer Lisa-Marie Sciroli custom-make her grad dress.
The hot-pink taffeta and black-satin creation has a long train in back and a short skirt in front to accent one of the leggy blond's best features.
Holland says she got the initial idea for her dress looking on the Internet Bridesmaid dresses, "and then it kind of went from there."
The grad dress (or prom dress as it's commonly called in the United States), is usually a teen girl's first formal wear long prom dresses, a rite of passage from adolescence to adulthood.
Most girls still buy their grad dresses off store racks, but Holland is part of a small and growing group that have their dresses made for them.
Sciroli (lisa-marie.ca) has moved into designing bridal wear and is expanding into ready-to-wear clothes. But her first love is making grad dresses. "I started with grad dresses because I found, for myself, I can never find something to just fit me," the designer says.
"I have a very curvy body, so when I started learning how to sew . I thought, I need to do custom because there are so many women out there that I think find it very hard to find dresses."
Some of them fall between a size 2 and a size 6 and can't find anything that fits. Or they're a little bigger and they're too shy to try on dresses in stores.
Grad girls, specifically, can be a bit insecure because they're young and they don't know what looks good on their body type, she says.
Sciroli designed her own grad dress from three patterns and sewed it with the help of a boyfriend's mom, who also sewed. It was 2003 and the grad dress du jour had a full skirt and was either pink or purple, she remembers. "So, I picked coral, and the skirt was very straight with a slit up the front of the left leg." It was also strapless.
Until a decade ago, there always seemed to be a certain popular style of grad dress every year that all the girls would run out and buy Formal dresses, Sciroli says.
"Now, it seems almost any style goes. People are finding their own style versus wearing what everyone else is wearing."
You see girls in everything from Cinderella-type ball gowns to silhouette-hugging styles to swingy, short, cocktail-length fashions.
But Sciroli is seeing more girls, influenced by what they're seeing on the red carpet of award shows, approach her with pictures of dresses they like, asking if certain changes can be made to it cheap Cocktail dresses, in such and such a colour cheap Formal dresses, and could she make it for their grad, within their budget?
The cost of a custom-made grad dress depends on the fabric it's made of and how much bling -brooches and beading -and detail are used to accent it, but usually runs from $350 to $700 Cocktail dresses, Sciroli says.
Sciroli starts the custom-made process by sending clients back to the stores they've just fled and tells them to try on some dresses to get an idea of the style they like and the style they don't like.
"They come in and say plus size prom dresse, 'I don't know what I want . ball gown dresses, I have nowhere to start,' " Sciroli says.
The designer and the grad met for a couple of hours every Saturday afternoon for seven weeks to tweak the design and for fittings.
