Heres a Web 2.0 anecdote as you: I got an email pitch from a guy appointed Kevin at birth, letting me understand approximately the Web-based classified ad service that he and his buddy Chad put attach in their rush hour. Called Listifieds.com, its based in the thriving metropolis of Bowling Green, Kentucky (which I remember especially for its where John Prine says his grandmother taught computer in the great old song Grampaw was a Carpenter).
Kevin says he and Chad first and foremost maneuvered to converge their service on Bowling Green exclusively, yet then they got lots of positive response and decided to take it national. Of course, the 1st entity that came into my idea was how compact the national classifieds mall namely, what with newspapers fighting to stay competitive
Vibram Five Fingers Kso, Craigslist dominating in dozens of important cities and newer entries such as Edgeio.com going after the Web business aggressively.
Is Kevin worried approximately anyone of this? Nope. He says we realize its a compact market but believe we tin stand out with our alignment of clean design, usability and trait list. Were no looking to obtain rich off of it. He figures they ambition sell featured listing spots and possibly banner ads to local businesses. In other words, putting together the site in relating terms probably didnt take that long or spend that much, and scaling it larger probably wont either (heres a peak, Kevin: check out Amazons S3 and EC2 services if you start to obtain a lot bigger).
I asked Kevin in one email about Craigslist and eBay and Edgeio and others, and here namely what he said (some segments clipped for space):
Clearly we dont have the brand awareness
Vibram Barefoot Running Shoes, the sale resources, or the money that these additional sites have. But I too calculate the market namely fragmented and in transition right now.
I think craigslist isnt that well known appearance of the big cities it operates in. I think eBay is virtually always associated with auctions, which some human dont like I dont put Edgeio in the same species for the additional sites for I believe it has an personality crisis, isnt that well known beyond the network 2.0 audience, and in my personal opinion, it is confounding to use.
In my opinion, we have the cleanest, clearest, easiest to use interface; We arent restricted to big cities like craigslist; We have longer listing run times up to 180 days as definite listing types; We offer plenty of photos and ways to depict your listing; We attempt some fine tools rss feeds, listing alerts, saved listings, recently viewed listings, website widget.
We think we have something agreeable to offer
Vibram Five Fingers Shoes, so we plan to give it a attempt and have fun doing it. If naught else, we can say our service is free also, why not list with us too?
If I were creature brutally credible, I would say Kevin and Chads service doesnt have a snowballs contingency in hell of appropriate a major compel in classifieds national. However, it could probably convert a pretty good little commerce in some smaller regional markets, and there is naught erroneous with that at entire and Kevin and his friend should be congratulated for giving it a shot. What do they must lose? Thats Web 2.0 in a nutshell.
